Hermès In The Pocket – the scarf Leigh P. Cook designed in 2007 as a collection of small things: an ivy leaf, a pencil stub, a clothes peg, a piece of string, a coin purse, a sea-shell, a coil of wire, a watercolour tube. The contents of a pocket, a drawer, a bag – things impossible to throw away, because each one is a fragment of life, a bundle of memories, the scrap of a story.

The drawing references Émile Hermès, who collected objects from early childhood through to the end of his life – not by catalogue logic but by his own passions and obsessions. Cook's scarf recovers that logic: it reads like an inventory in which each object only makes sense in the company of the others. A piece best looked at up close.

The aquamarine palette gives the composition its lightness – the objects float as if against an underwater background, soft, weightless.
