Cartier Love – what to know

The Love motif was designed by Aldo Cipullo for Cartier in New York in 1969. The bracelet came first, fastened with screws and conceived as a symbol you don't simply take off. The signature screws later carried across to rings and bands, today among the most recognisable designs in jewellery – worn alone or stacked several to a finger.

Three things matter when buying pre-loved. First, the metal – most pieces are 18-karat (750) yellow, rose or white gold, sometimes set with diamonds along the line of screws. Second, the size: a Love ring should sit securely, as the narrow band turns easily on the finger when it's too large. Third, the markings – authentic pieces carry the Cartier signature, a serial number and gold hallmarks.

What's the difference between the classic Love ring and the Wedding Band?

The classic Love ring carries the full screw motif around the band. The Wedding Band is narrower and more minimal, designed as a wedding ring. Both come from the same 1969 design.
